e-learning trends in 2017
If you lack an inspiration how to point learning strategy or to improve the existing one, 2017 e-learning trends may help you. Leading expert and organizations talk mainly about:
Virtual reality (VR), Augmented reality (AR)
Virtual reality takes you to 360⁰ world, where you can explore, study or interact in various ways. Virtual reality can be utilized by HR for hiring or onboarding to introduce prospects with new working environment and culture before entering the company building. Alternatively VR can teach work processes in risk sectors such as mining or chemical industry. Medicine, army, logistics or aviation are next industries suitable for VR application. See a sample of VR in our e-learnmedia Christmas greeting.
Augmented reality is enriched with text or picture format objects. These objects come from different sources be it online or offline. Recent blockbuster Pokémon Go game was downloaded by more than 500 million users. A user saw reality via smartphone combined with inserted digital objects - Pokemon symbols to be captured.
Microlearning
Who's got time to study while busy with daily tasks? E-learning evolved from multi-hour modules through hour, 45-minute and 25-minute and short targeted "pieces of wisdom" we can be even awarded for. Although microlearning has been around since 2000, thanks to new tools and methodology we can expect mass microlearning penetration already this year.
Gamification
Gamification or transfer of gaming concepts to real world is not just for kids. It increases adult learning engagement and makes the interaction with learning content easier. It is a powerful tool supporting skills, memory and ability to solve problems. Generation Y is just coming to work market - what can be a better way to attract them than gamification?
Personalization
Correct usage of data in learning gives students better study experience which positively impacts their interest to use modern learning technologies further. Calling student by name, detailed student activity analytics, and suggesting relevant content are tools for effective learning. Nothing difficult for the beginning. Simply avoid so called sheep dip approach and grab more targeted learning.
Content filtering
We are flooded with information. Daily articles, videos, blogs, podcasts, etc. It becomes more and more important to filter according to content or area of interest. Sorted content may become appropriate learning source without need to create it from scratch. Christopher Pappas offers good manual how to filter content as well as Anders Pink put together 10 steps to filter attractive content.
Video and interactive video
Most of the transferred data on internet belongs to video. No wonder. Our smartphones can shoot, edit and share videos to social networks or video platform. YouTube offers plenty of learning lessons both amateur and professional. And yet, interactive videos transform passive audio and picture watching to a interactive learning experience.
